A Chocolate Factory in the Desert: Ethel M and the Garden That Lights Up November

Henderson makes chocolate — the Ethel M factory has produced it here since 1981 — and its cactus garden's holiday lights are a valley tradition about to switch on.

One of Henderson's oldest attractions smells like chocolate. The Ethel M Chocolate Factory, opened in 1981 by Mars founder Forrest Mars Sr. and named for his mother, still produces the brand's liqueur-filled and gourmet chocolates in Henderson — and lets visitors watch through the factory's viewing aisle, free.

The factory tour is the valley's most reliable small outing: a self-guided walk past the production floor, a tasting at the end, and a retail shop that does its biggest business in the weeks before the holidays.

The second act is outside. The factory's three-acre Botanical Cactus Garden — one of the largest cactus collections in Nevada, with more than 300 species of cactus and desert plants — transforms each holiday season into the Holiday Cactus Garden, wrapped in hundreds of thousands of lights. It is one of the Las Vegas Valley's defining free holiday traditions, drawing families from across the metro.

The garden's lighting season typically begins in early November, turning the factory grounds into an evening destination through the New Year; the factory posts dates and details for each year's display, and admission policies for the lights have varied by season, so checking before going is the local's move.

The pairing is pure Henderson: industry and garden, factory and festival — a working chocolate plant that doubles as the city's holiday postcard.

For newcomers, the Ethel M visit is a rite: factory first for the free sample, garden at dusk for the lights. Forty-plus years in, the tradition renews itself every November, one strand of lights at a time.
